Chapter 14
Richard Moranis sat quietly in his holding cell â alone. He shook his head in disgust at the conditions inside the cell and made it a point to write an article about his experience once he was released.
He scanned the confined conditions and wondered how long someone could be locked up in here and not lose their mind.
He heard the guards outside as they paced back-and-forth and the murmurs and mumblings from the other prisoners as they awaited trial or their release. His mind was made up when he forced Scotland to get him a lawyer â a good one â and not one of those court-appointed ones right out of school.
He got up and fumed as he checked the condition of his mouth where Scotland hit him. He looked at his blurred image in the metal mirror that was scratched and distorted. It was uncalled for and he stewed and made sure the bleeding had stopped. He pulled his mouth to the side and winced at the pain. He swore he could feel a loose tooth somewhere in his mouth, but he did not want to risk making things worse. He snarled his lip and mumbled under his breath, âBitch.â
He was startled when the viewing door slammed open and a guard checked to see where he was.
âDick Moranis!â The guard chided him, and the sound echoed throughout the area.
Wild uncontrolled laughing and hooting could be heard throughout the jail area.
The guard looked around outside and he fumed as he yelled out loud so the other prisoners could hear him, âShut-it!â
It immediately went quiet and he pursed his lips satisfied that his power reigned supreme. He turned back to the prisoner he came to see. âSomeone wants to see you, Moranis. Now.â
--------
Richard marched down the hallway toward the interview area once more and hoped it was good news. âIs it my lawyer?â
The guard did not care to be questioned and was gruff and in a foul mood. âJust keep walking.â
Richard thought long a hard and hoped it was not Scotland Yarde to hit him in the face again. His thoughts darkened as he thought he would have to defend himself this time, but that would take all of two seconds before she really went to work and kicked the shit out of him. His pulse raced as he approached the interview area and his spirits lifted as he caught sight of his guest.
He excitedly sat down and looked her up-and down and smiled at her â bewildered. He wondered why she would be visiting him, but he was happy just to see a familiar face. âJoanneâ¦â He smiled but winced in pain. âIâm so happy to see you.â
Joanneâs eyes were wide with shock. âOh my godâ¦â She tried to reach out but saw the guard shake his head for her to keep her hands to herself. âWhat happened? Did you get into a fight?â Her look was grave at his condition.
Richard shook his head. âIt was Scotland Yarde.â
Joanne looked at him confused and her head tilted to the side.
